Volunteering with LVFC

Volunteer Applications are Open!

Whether you desire a multi-day staffing position or just wish to donate a few hours of your time, LVFC appreciates any and all the volunteers who make this convention possible, and we have many open positions to fill. Las Vegas Fur Con is a nonprofit event staffed entirely by volunteers; no one receives cash for their work on the convention. However, conventions are a lot of work to put on (even if they are a labor of love), so we are proud to offer comps – free benefits – to people who work on the convention. Our convention is built on the idea that it should take care of those who take care of the convention.

One of the relatively-rare features of SNV Anthro Events, LVFC’s parent organization, is that it incorporates democracy into its structure: people who volunteer 8 or more hours for the organization are granted voting rights for general meetings and board elections. This promotes accountability within our organization.

At LVFC, we have two categories of volunteers: Staff and Recruits. Based on the amount of hours worked (which can be calculated based on time-and-a-half or double time) and whether one is classed as Staff or Recruit, there are different perks.

Staff and Recruits must both agree to the Volunteer Code of Conduct included in the application.

Recruits

Recruits are people who have recently joined our team, and typically are brought on at-con. We do not expect them to necessarily fulfill their shifts, but those who do are far more likely to be considered for staff in a future year.

Becoming a volunteer requires no experience, no interview, just a willingness to help the con out however you can. In return, you can get the perks below! We will work around whatever hours you tell us you will be free, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get more hours as the con goes on.

Perks

4 Hours

  • Early access to next year’s room block
  • A special gift!

8 Hours

  • A line priority pass as if you were a Sponsor
  • Membership in SNV Anthro Events per Section 3.03 of the Bylaws

12 Hours

  • Comped Attendee badge – badge is refunded, or Attendee credit for next year

While we do not plan to make recruits work more than 12 hours, there may be a shortfall of labor at which point we will grant additional comps to those who help out:

16 Hours

  • $25 con store credit

20 Hours

  • Additional $50 con store credit
  • Admission to staff banquet

Note: LVFC is a team. We are founded on principles of diversity, justice, equality, and inclusion. No matter how high a staff member is, they have no right to be rude to or belittle you. Please let us know if any lead, head, or board member has mistreated you.

Staff

Staff are people we can rely on, those who have committed to a certain number of hours which we assume they will fill. A lot of their work is pre-convention as well. They are people we have worked with or who have experience volunteering at other conventions. Members of our Staff, also known as Officers, are tasked with a specific role but are also expected to help out with whatever responsibilities they may need to take up. All Officers are required to commit at least 12 hours during the convention, but in return receive a number of perks.

Officers are assigned to one of four departments: Marketing, Operations, Programming, or Registration & Sales. Between the Con Chair and the Officers, there is a Head of the Department who acts as an intermediary. Officers who are in charge of a team are also called “Leads.” Leads, in addition to their duties, are also in charge of supervising their own set of Assistant Officers and Recruits.

In order to become a staff member, you must be interviewed by our HR Lead and approved by the Board of Directors. If you are interested, please fill out the Volunteer Form above and email hr@lasvegasfurcon.org.

All staff have the following benefits:

  • A volunteer gift.
  • Early access to the room block for the current year and next year
  • A unique staff badge.
  • Front of line privileges for main events when off shift
  • Access to the Hospitality Suite
  • Access to the Staff Banquet
  • Voting rights for a year for SNV Anthro Events general meetings

Beyond these benefits, there are some slight differences between the three tiers:

  • 12 Hours: Comped Sponsor-Level badge.
  • 24 Hours: Comped Super Sponsor-Level badge.
  • On-Call: This is for a handful of top staff such as the chair and department heads. We do not desire to make anyone work more than 24 hours during the convention, but in the event of a shortfall of personnel, these are the people who might be called on to fill vital roles.

Department and Role Descriptions

At present, LVFC is organized into 5 departments: IT, Marketing, Operations, Programming, and Sales & Registration. We anticipate as we grow and our needs evolve, we will create more departments and reorganize exact sub-departments/offices.

Each department is listed in alphabetic order below with its head, deputy head (if applicable), and its subsidiary offices in alphabetic order below it.

If your lead asks you to do a task you are not comfortable with, please let them know so we can assign it to someone else. We want you to feel confident in your role, and most importantly, to have some fun helping out.

Some offices only need one person so are not listed on applications. Offices seeking more staff will have OPEN next to them.

Information Technology (Head: Violet)

AKA IT. This department manages, configures and maintains electronic equipment owned by the convention, and online systems used by the convention. Continually research new technical tools and processes that facilitate smooth operations across all departments.

IT is both a department and an office at present, and is OPEN for staff.

Marketing (Head: Tani Coyote)

Marketing is responsible for ensuring our convention is well-advertised and well-responsive to criticisms beyond the convention space itself, helping to make us bigger and better each year. Due to the nature of Marketing, a lot of its work is not on the con floor.

Chatroom Moderation (OPEN)

Help LVFC moderate its various official chatrooms on Discord and Telegram. Ensure announcements and news are forwarded to these groups, and that questions from them are kicked up to management as needed.

Graphic Design (OPEN)

Help the convention design marketing materials, as well as decorations. This includes theme design, conbook design, signage design, and decoration design.

Photography (OPEN)

Capture professional photos and videos for the convention which can be used to generate publicity. With photos, taking attendees’ names where applicable so they can be referenced on social media.

Public Relations

Represent the convention in an official capacity with outside organizations: press, vendors, etc. Negotiate commissions on the convention’s behalf.

Social Media (OPEN)

Plan announcements, engage with followers, attract new followers, respond promptly to questions and concerns via our social media: Twitter, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Web Design (OPEN)

Designing and maintaining our website.

Operations (Head: Sakara Vixen; Deputy Head: Kiro Yrmori)

The Operations department (not to be confused with the “Ops” office) is what allows all the other departments to successfully do their jobs at-con.

Attendee Welfare (OPEN)

Manage lines. Ensure the general safety and well-being of attendees by monitoring for signs of dehydration and also avoiding escalation of disputes. Enforce the code of conduct and escalate to hotel security as necessary.

Con Ops aka “Info Desk” (OPEN)

Answer attendee questions and collect attendee concerns. Operate the Lost and Found. Communicate with other offices and departments to ensure equipment and staff are where they are needed.

Human Resources (HR)

Interview top-level positions prior to being hired by the Board.

Logistics (OPEN)

Conduct load-in on Thursday and load-out on Sunday night. Haul and maintain equipment as necessary during the convention.

Recruit Coordination and Gophers (OPEN)

This office directs gophers and Recruits to where they are needed. Supervise sign-in and sign-out of recruits.

Apply for gopher if you just want to help pre or at-con, and we can find somewhere for you based on your skillset! Gophers are often assigned to help with lines, check badges, setup and teardown, or speed up the registration process. These small tasks keep a convention functioning when staff aren’t available and are a great way to see if you enjoy volunteering.

Programming (Head: Crake)

Programming is the most front-facing part of the convention, putting together all the events and panels attendees enjoy. Programming manages dances, panels, main events, and also aids with accessibility and charity events.

Offices TBA: Dances, scheduling panels, accessibility, helping with charity events.

Audio/Visual (OPEN)

Aka “AV.” Carefully follow instructions from experienced people. Operate video and sound equipment. Make sure lights work as needed and sound equipment vibrates like having one too many coffees.

Fursuit Lounge (OPEN)

Keep the fursuit lounge clean and stocked. Watch for signs of overheating on attendees.

Gaming Lounge (OPEN)

Maintain the game lounge. Operate check-in and check-out of games. Manage tournaments. Secure games and equipment when room is not staffed.

Guest of Honor and Featured Guest Handler

Coordinate with Guests of Honor and Featured Guests to make sure their needs are met, and they are at scheduled panels and tables.

Party Maven (OPEN)

Manage the noisy block. Provide assistance to party hosts as needed. Ensure party hosts are enforcing age restrictions.

Quiet Lounge (OPEN)

Ensure Quiet Lounge users are largely quiet and not using the room to sleep. Ensure Quiet Lounge has supply of water.

Sales and Registration (Acting Head: Ivy/Ozy)

Sales and Registration (Sales and Reg) is responsible for the convention’s cash flow. Most conventions keep them separate, but given our mailed badge system, we are keeping registration largely the same department for now.

Charity

Plan new events to bring in money for charity. Operate charity auction on Sunday. Provide donation-handling support to charity events if needed.

Con Store (OPEN)

Operate convention store. Sell convention merchandise. Perform customer service as needed.

Pre-Registration (OPEN)

Most attendee’s first interaction with the convention. Check IDs. Distribute and ID verify badges. Hand out swag. Manage lines. (NDA required)

Registration (OPEN)

Most attendee’s first interaction with the convention. Accept payments, process registrations, and print badges. Provide registration system support. Hand out swag. Cashier for charity events. Cash handling experience preferred. (NDA required)

Registration also distributes comps pre- and post-con.

Vendors (OPEN)

Manage Artist Alley and Dealers Den. Ensure compliance with vendor rules and assist vendors with tax paperwork. Manage lines as necessary.
